Located at the heart of UBC’s campus, the Bookstore occupies a prominent, high-traffic site within the university’s public realm. Despite its central position, the original building lacked a clearly defined entrance and did not fully leverage its visibility or potential as a campus destination. The UBC Bookstore reframes the store as an open and welcoming public destination, strengthening its relationship to the campus and reinforcing its presence within the broader public realm.
The project includes a comprehensive reconfiguration and expansion of the existing retail environment, alongside the introduction of a new café and convenience store. It also encompasses broader master planning and rebranding strategies to unify the facility. The design focuses on clarifying the building’s presence, improving pedestrian flow, and establishing a bright, welcoming interior that supports browsing, social interaction, and extended use. Retail areas, circulation paths, and points of entry are carefully coordinated to create a legible and engaging spatial experience.
The introduction of a mezzanine provides additional space for informal gathering and independent study. Visible from the exterior, the mezzanine acts as an architectural focal point, contributing to the building’s renewed identity. Its text-fritted glass, developed through a public engagement process, filters daylight into the interior while creating a shifting pattern of light and opacity throughout the day. This expressive element offers solar control while inviting curiosity, reinforcing the Bookstore’s presence as an active and memorable part of campus life.
