The Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM) Learning Centre is part of a series of renewal projects for the RBCM, a prominent cultural landmark in Victoria’s Inner Harbour. Aligned with the RBCM Masterplan developed in 2013 by omb in collaboration with London-based John McAslan + Partners, the Centre is envisioned as a vibrant, multi-functional educational environment promoting strong community connections.

Supporting a wide range of users, from early learners and school groups to adult education programs and community events, the design response prioritizes flexibility and adaptability – enabling multiple concurrent activities within a welcoming and intellectually rich space. A large multipurpose room accommodates a range of events and functions and includes a playful mezzanine. Two adjacent tech-enabled classrooms are configured such that they can be combined or divided. The Centre also includes an early learners’ area with a double height play structure for less structured activities. Ancillary spaces are carefully planned to support group logistics, while the arrival hallway functions as an active extension of the learning experience.

A defining feature of the project was the integration of rotating artifacts from the Museum’s extensive collection, allowing direct engagement with BC’s cultural and natural history. Modular furniture, thoughtful use of technology, and adaptable layouts support evolving programming and future uses. Although construction was paused due to broader Masterplan developments, the design establishes a strong foundation for a dynamic, community-focused hub for learning and discovery.
