The Nanaimo Airport (YCD) expansion strengthens the airport’s role as a gateway to central Vancouver Island. Developed as the first phase of a broader master plan, the project expands passenger processing capacity while establishing a flexible architectural framework that supports the airport’s continued evolution

The first phase focuses on expanding the passenger departure lounge and introducing dedicated security screening areas. The architectural response features an elegant and flexible modular design, allowing structural and façade elements to be easily repeated. This approach ensures future additions can be seamlessly integrated as the airport continues to grow.

Rooted in its surroundings, the design draws from the region’s natural landscape, geology, and industrial heritage, particularly its mining and forestry history. The building’s distinctive form also references early aeronautical structures and acknowledges the legacy of celebrated pilot Raymond Collishaw, after whom the original terminal was named. Together, these influences shape a memorable passenger experience and establish an architectural identity that reflects both the history and character of Vancouver Island.
