The new Capstan SkyTrain Station will serve Capstan Village, a dense new urban mixed-use centre in Richmond BC. It will be the first ‘infill’ SkyTrain station design which involved the design team working closely with the City of Richmond and TransLink to address station operation needs and the City’s ambitious Official Community Plan goals for the immediate neighbourhood.
The station’s expressive form anticipates and responds to future adjacent developments, while showcasing people’s movement in and around the station. The design includes a civic material palette, including prefabricated steel framing and mass timber components. The new station is the result of an innovative agreement between TransLink and the City of Richmond that established a precedent-setting funding model where the project was cost-shared between the two parties.
The station features art from local artist, Howie Tsui depicting aquatic life in the Fraser River estuary, which lies only 350 m from the station. The large mosaic spans more than 3,600 square feet and was created using over 3,500 custom-made glazed glass and metallic tiles.
