Located in Vancouver’s West End, adjacent to English Bay Park, Muro, formerly known as The Berkeley Tower, occupies a prominent site at the intersection of Davie, Denman, and Beach Avenue. The renewal of the residential tower strengthens its presence within one of Vancouver’s most active urban neighbourhoods, enhancing both building performance and the resident experience while contributing to the character of the surrounding streetscape.
Originally constructed in 1958, the building underwent a comprehensive renewal that includes seismic and life-safety upgrades, envelope replacement, building system improvements, and extensive interior renovations. A new commercial infill building occupies the former surface parking lot, strengthening the retail frontage and redefining the public interface. Together, these interventions introduce a landscaped courtyard that creates a clear and considered residential entry while mediating between the street and the tower.
Targeted modifications to the building envelope enhance interior quality and strengthen connections to the surrounding landscape. Enlarged corner windows frame views toward English Bay, the North Shore Mountains, and the city beyond while increasing daylight throughout the residential suites. A mural by Douglas Coupland wraps the tower on all four sides, contributing a strong visual identity that reflects the character and energy of the West End while reinforcing the building’s renewed presence on the skyline.
