The renovation of the Vancouver International Film Centre strengthens the facility’s role as a venue for film, events, and community engagement. Developed for the Greater Vancouver International Film Festival Society, the project repositions key public spaces to support expanded programming while improving visibility, accessibility, and day-to-day use. The renewed environment creates a welcoming and adaptable setting aligned with the organization’s role in promoting screen-based media.

The project focuses on the transformation of the atrium and production room, introducing a reconfigurable event space capable of accommodating a wide range of activities, from informal gatherings to presentations, screenings, and special events. Spatial planning improves circulation and usability throughout the centre, enabling larger audiences while maintaining a clear and intuitive visitor experience. A contemporary café anchors the atrium, extending activity beyond scheduled programming and creating opportunities for everyday use.

Material and lighting strategies brighten the interior and introduce warmth, with wood elements softening the architectural framework and reinforcing a welcoming atmosphere. The design balances openness with spaces for pause and interaction, allowing the centre to function as both an active event venue and an informal gathering place. Together, these interventions create a flexible and cohesive public environment that supports cultural programming and community engagement.
